Documents and information released by the FBI after the Freedom of Information Act indicates that the Rosenbergs never did have any atomic bomb information. They were convicted (and do appear to have in fact been guilty) of espionage but there was never any evidence to support the theory that they passed on atomic secrets specifically. Much of the information on them was given to the FBI by Ethel's brother David Greenglass (who had admitted being part of a spy ring himself.). Greenglass later said that he had inflated many of the claims against his sister.
Their case file, which is really interesting, can be read here:
http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/roberg.htm The assumption of their knowledge of atomic secrets came because both of the Rosenbergs, along with Greenglass, were thought to be in collusion with Klaus Fuchs, who was head of the physics department at Harwell, the British nuclear research center.
