If I have got my Bible history right, Herod did not attempt or commit Suicide. He was a Biblical bad guy, but Judas- sometimes called Judas Iscariot was the biblical traitor who did take his own life by hanging himself from a tree. Herod, being a king- well suicides look bad for posterity, you know.Herod was a bad guy- as he ordered the senseless massacre of all children under a certain age in Jersusalem province- which sparked the so-called Flight Into Egypt. The odd thing about this is when the Holy Family return to their home province the attitude seems to be more like ( well the fire was on the other side of town, or Not on My watch!) and there were no feelings of compassion for the innocent victims which must have been in the hundreds. This Massacre is one of several- and one can factor in modern accidents and ( collateral damage) in wars and natural disasters- forming the basis of the Feast of the Holy Innocents- December 28, sometimes called Childermass ! a Chill indeed. occurring inside the orbit of the Christmas holidays, it often escapes detection. this is the only church holiday that would seem to furnish sermon topics for- child abuse- but rarely does this come up.
We don't know for certain how Herod the Great died. According to Josephus he died in excruciating pain. Modern researchers think he may have had chronic kidney disease or even scabies, but these are just educated guesses, nothing certain.
The emperor Caligula had Herod Antipas exiled to Gaul, where he died. Cassius Dio, in the third century, seems to imply that Caligula had him killed there, but modern historians usually treat this account with scepticism.
Acts 12:23 says “An angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died
He didn't attempt suicide he was assassinated by a man...not sure of the name.
