The US first minted nickels in 1866.You may have a 2004 nickel minted to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition. It carries the date 1803 on the back to indicate the year that the expedition began.

Thomas Jefferson was president at the time of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. infact, he sent Lewis out to explore and Lewis chose Clark to come along. So, Thomas Jefferson had a huge influence on the expedition.

Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark led an expedition to the Louisiana Territory and US Northwest from 1804 to 1806, referred to as the Corps of Discovery.
Jefferson conceived and ordered the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase. Additionally, Jefferson wished to validate US territorial claims, as purchased from France, over prospective claims by Spain.
He sent Lewis and Clark on an expedition west. He led to the US getting the west.
