Meriwhether Lewis, the leader of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition, shot himself on October 11,1809, while traveling from St. Louis to Washington DC. He was 35 years old.
He was suffering from Alcoholism and depression and had many problems. He stopped for the night at a tavern and was reported to be acting strangely. During the night, the tavern owner's wife heard gunshots and perhaps cries for help. In the morning he was found still alive, but he died soon after. His family claimed he had been murdered, but everyone else accepted that it was a suicide.
