The Louisiana purchase did not really challenge Thomas Jefferson's presidency, but in fact helped it. He bought it extremely cheap off of the bankrupt French and used it to execute American expansionism. The only problem that came out of it was the Indians, which would pose a much larger problems in later presidencies.

The argument can be made that the Louisiana Purchase by President Jefferson was unconstitutional since there are no rights listed for the President to expand the borders of the United States. Supporters of this action however argue that Jefferson was acting as a treaty with France and Spain in the purchase and therefore it was constitutional.
