The Louisiana purchase did not really challenge Thomas Jefferson's presidency, but in fact helped it. He bought it extremely cheap off of the bankrupt French and used it to execute American expansionism. The only problem that came out of it was the Indians, which would pose a much larger problems in later presidencies.

Can US President Thomas Jefferson's purchase of the Louisiana Territory be an example of unilateral presidential authority?

US President Harry Truman once used the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 as an example of unilateral presidential authority and initiative. He even had some support from "constitutional" attorneys in the Justice Department to support him. Most constitutional scholars, however, did not see the Louisiana Purchase in that light at all. The US Congress made an objection to Jefferson's acts and to solidify its stance confirmed the envoys who negotiated the purchase, appropriated the funds for the purchase, ratified and ratified the treaty confirming the purchase.

How did the president violate the Constitution by making the Louisiana Purchase?

It was violated because it did not say anywhere in the Constitution that the president could buy or sell land, But after much consideration he did make the settlement. The argument can be made that the Louisiana Purchase by President Jefferson was unconstitutional since there are no rights listed for the President to expand the borders of the United States. Supporters of this action however argue that Jefferson was acting as a treaty with France and Spain in the purchase and therefore it was constitutional.
