His commitment to native culture, rights and society and his role in opposition to Spanish colonialism through the Tondo Conspiracy of 1587-1588 describe the way that Magat Salamat became a hero in the Philippines. As crown prince and the second of four sons of Bunao Lakandula (1503-1589), ruler of the pre-colonial Kingdom of Tondo, Datu Magat Salamat (1550-1589?) organized opposition, along with Don Geronimo Bassi, Agustín de Legazpi, Agustín Manuguit, Martín Panga and Felipe Salalila and the chiefs of Candaba, Catangalan, Navotas, Pandakan and Polo. He never received promised support from Borneo by the Sultan or from Japan by Japanese adventurer Juan Gayo and was deprived of his life, whose sacrifice resulted from the first known united resistance of Filipinos to erosion of native culture, economy, rights and society, and of his possessions, which went into making Manila a fortress of defense for Spanish colonialism until 1898, and of offense against Philippine nationalism.
