The rise of exploration was caused by Marco Polo. He had stories of going to graet lands he called china. most people did not believe him though. But when a book called "The Journeys Of Marco Polo" was published it made young exploerers curios about what the woould find. But curiosity wasn't the only reason they went the wanted to become rich. Marco Polo described there being caves with marvelous jewels.
The original push to explore the seas probably was sparked by the book describing Marco Polo's travels in the Far East. Indeed, Columbus set out to find a faster route to China and the riches Marco Polo found there.
They tired to find anyway to save money, and by finding the best bargain deal.

Marco Polo went to China with his uncle and father who were merchants in Venice, Italy. They wanted to trade with China so he just went with them. It took them 4 years to get there and he stayed for 25 until he got home to Italy.
