Until the Civil Rights Movement African American musicians were kept off of white stations and their music wasn't played/sold. Very few were featured on TV and in alive shows they would play large rooms but not be able to stay at the venue where they played. One comes to mind is Sammy Davis Jr. He was part of the Rat Pack and was featured in Las Vegas but couldn't stay in the hotel where he had a show.
