In the story I have heard, Sir Mordred was supposedly Arthur's Son/Nephew. Merlin Prophesied that Arthur's son would kill him. Arthur sent Mordred out with 40 other babies to die afloat in a coracle out in the sea. Mordred was the only survivor, grew up in Lothe, and became a knight of the round table. Mordred was the son of King Arthur and his own half sister, Morgan Le Fay. The primary reason Arthur killed him was that they met on opposite sides of a battlefield and it was kill or be killed. Arthur himself received a mortal wound in the encounter. More generally, Mordred was in rebellion, trying to sieze the throne for himself.Morded's mother was Morgause, not Morgan le Fay.
