Northern newspapers hailed the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam. When the news about the lack of a Union follow up became known, Republican newspapers blamed McClellan while Democratic newspapers blamed Secretary of War Edwin Stanton for that failure.

First person POV
President Lincoln.
The Battle of Gettysburg was a defeat for the Army of Northern Virginia. The Southern press, its people and leaders understood this and were sorely disappointed. The lost battle however, did not cause enough harm to keep Robert E. Lee from reorganizing his army and prepare for more battlefield action. On a logistical and military view, the South was not harmed enough to tilt the war in any particular manner.
This unexpected Northern win gave Lincoln the credibility to issue the Emancipation Proclamation without making it look like a desperate measure. The Proclamation made it ethically impossible for Britain to aid the Confederates - a most siignificant outcome. The battle also spelt the end for McClellan. Although he had won the battle, he failed to pursure and destroy the Army of Northern Virginia, which the whole of Lincoln's cabinet thought he should have done, and he was promptly replaced by Burnside.
For a few days after General Lee had retreated back to Virginia after the Battle of Antietam, Lee remained optimistic. He refused to accept that Antietam was anything worse than a temporary setback. He believed that his army after a brief rest and the recovery of stragglers. He used this rest period to resupply his army with food and ammunition. To be safe, Lee concentrated his army well south of the Potomac River.Lee did come to realize that by September 21, 1862, his army would be unable to assume any offensive operations. In his report to Jefferson Davis, he detailed the weakened state of the Army of Northern Virginia.
They learned that the southern army could fight just as well, if not better than the northern army, and this would be a long struggle.

It was the second and last time that the Confederates had failed to invade the North. From then on, they were on the defensive. This improved Northern morale and discouraged foreign observers from treating the Confederacy as a viable nation.

The North's objective was, first, to restore the Union. After Antietam when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery arose as an important secondary goal.

Mountain View is technically in "northern California", but in reality is pretty much in the middle between north and south. Mountain View is a suburb of San Jose, at the southern end of San Francisco Bay.
After the Battle of Antietam and the Confederate retreat back to Virginia, General McClellan proposed a plan of action that appears to be a logical one from a military and political point of view. He proposed to prevent more Southern raids into the North by securing a line along the Potomac River and along the Shenandoah Valley. This plan was ambitious and required extensive bridge building and railroad constructions that would be fortified to protect them. He also saw the prospect of renewing his peninsula campaign in 1863 as the plans to secure the Potomac and the Shenandoah Valley would have protected Washington DC.
