How did Phillip become blind in the book The Cay?

• Timothy makes guide ropes ,so Philip can walk.
• Soon, Timothy makes a cane for Philip and he describes the plants and what is on the cay.
• Philip also becomes more dependent on his hearing, and in chapter eleven the first and most of the pages in that chapter describe what he hears and feels.

Phillip became blind when the ship he was on was torpedoed during World War II, causing him to be stranded on a deserted island with an old West Indian man named Timothy in the book "The Cay". An explosion on the ship resulted in Phillip getting hit on the head, which eventually led to his blindness.
