Phineas Gage was foreman of a team of railroad buildersin Cavendish, Vermont in mid 1800s. The track being built by his crew was right through solid rock, so they had to use gun powder to blow a path through. The other workers would dig a hole in the side of the stone, where the explosives would be placed. One of Phineas' duties was to put sand and explosives in the holes. He needed a tamping iron to do this. It was 13 ft long nd thick. . For some reason Gage did not set the sand. The explosives went off, driving the rod right through his skull and brain. The rod entered through below his left jaw(where you feel your pulse)and vertically upwards through his brain. It destroyed the part of the brain that controls personality. He survived, but died 11 years later. After the accident, he was a changed person.
