In a number of ways, he twice fled (in secret) from papal proceedings against him and hid for a number of months. When he received communication from the Pope, he made a public act of burning it, and finally, he reacted more and more aggresively, expanding his disagreement with the Catholic Church, redacting verses and several books (primarily the Apocrypha) from The Bible, and calling Pope Leo X the anti-Christ.

Roman Catholic AnswerPope Leo X reacted initially by trying to reason with Martin Luther; after all there have been numerous reformers in the Church for 1,500 before Luther, and there would be more after him. By, of most concern to the Pope were the vast numbers of people who were being shut off from the only sure means of salvation - belief in Christ, and reception of the Sacraments. Only when all other avenues fail, did the Holy Father resort to excommunication, which is a very serious thing. Pope Leo X, before doing that, had summoned Martin Luther to Rome to discuss things, and, when that failed, sent his representatives to Germany to meet with Luther. If you read the 95 Thesis that Martin Luther posted on the castle door, you realize exactly how ignorant and untrained Martin Luther actually was, and the tragedy that he was working for those who would lose their salvation by leaving the only Church established by Our Blessed Lord for their salvation.
