At the time there were very few other seafaring countries. The English trade fleet was practically non-existent at the time, and the Dutch still focused solely on European sea transport. Spain - despite sponsoring Columbus - never really was a seafaring / exploring nation.
As a result, Portugal was the only European country in posession of trading stations in the East and for a long time dominated the trade in spices. It would last until the early 17th century, when the Dutch republic started to send out expeditions and took over much of the Portuguese markets.
