President Kennedy set up a naval blockade to turn back Soviet ships that were carrying missiles to Cuba. The US promised not to invade Cuba and to remove nuclear missiles from Turkey and Europe in exchange for the dismantling of missile bases in Cuba.

In the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, President Kennedy took a number of critical steps necessary to resolve the crisis successfully. He reviewed the intelligence that had been gathered from direct and indirect sources while also contacting Soviet officials, he gathered and consulted with diverse experts (individuals and teams) within his administration and throughout the government (as well as international allies), he prepared a strategic response, he communicated the situation publicly (and in a rhetorically powerful way), he awaited the Soviet/Cuban response, he utilized military force to enact the 'force-steps' he had judged necessary, he engaged in further diplomacy with the Soviets and further consultation with his experts (as well as with international allies) in the temporary stand-off that followed, then he and the Soviet leader (Khrushchev) were able to negotiate a final deal that averted a disastrous war.
