He died by after being suspected as a hidden supporter of the "terror of the ghost dance" ERA. He was taken to Pine ridge reservation army commanders head quarters where he died by rotting to death in jail. He was blind and 90 years old at the time.
As a warrior and a statesman, Red Cloud's success in confrontations with the United States government marked him as one of the most important Lakota leaders of the nineteenth century.
Beginning in 1866, Red Cloud orchestrated the most successful war against the United States ever fought by an Indian nation. The army had begun to construct forts along the Bozeman Trail, which ran through the heart of Lakota territory in present-day Wyoming to the Montana gold fields from Colorado's South Platte River
Red Cloud's strategies were so successful that by 1868 the United States government had agreed to the Fort Laramie Treaty. The treaty's remarkable provisions mandated that the United States abandon its forts along the Bozeman Trail and guarantee the Lakota their possession of what is now the Western half of South Dakota, including the Black Hills, along with much of Montana and Wyoming.
Red Cloud was also a mentor to Crazy Horse, who fought with him in the Bozeman trail war.
He went on to ensure that his tribe was awarded one of the largest reservations in the U.S.A. and he headed that reservation for many years.
During the summer of 1876, when Crazy Horse led many Sioux on the warpath, Red Cloud could not leave his responsibility at the reservation, But he did send one of his sons to fight with Crazy Horse, carrying Red Cloud's ceremonial rifle.
Later, months after the Little Bighorn battle, when Red Cloud's rifle was discovered upon Crazy Horse's surrender... Red Cloud was stripped of his position in charge of the reservation that bore his name. And it was ultimately split into two reservations.
Red Cloud also traveled East to meet with congressional and civic groups pushing for the rights and agendas of his people.
He lived a long life and never stopped advocating for the Sioux people.
Red Cloud got his name by ex-agent McGillycuddy
who refered to the way in which his scarlet-blanketed warriors formerly covered the hillsides like a red cloud.
