When the Romans conquered their empire, in order to foster an easier conversion to Christianity, they took many of the customs of the pagans around them and incorporated them into their religion. For instance, Easter was originally the worship of Ishtar, the fertility goddess. For Christmas, the origin was the worship of the Roman Saturnalia, or Sun God.

Of course we do. Northern Europe practically invented Christmas, only we don't call it Christmas. We call it its original name - Jul (or Yule in english). Sinse northern europe was the last part to Christianize, the new religion of Christianity was heavily influenced by our old pegan traditions. Yule is one example. Of course it has changed through the ages, but Yule in Denmark is today still a celebration of the Light ( Midwinter Solstice ), with a few christian symbols thrown in.
