Bartholomew is usually identified with Nathanael (alternatively spelled Nathaniel), who appears in the Gospel according to John as being introduced to Christ by Philip, who would also become an Apostle.

Saint Bartholomew, also known as Nathanael, became a disciple of Jesus when he was introduced to him by Philip. After encountering Jesus, Bartholomew recognized him as the Son of God and chose to follow him. He later became one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.
