It seems the whole life of Saint George is speculated. His birth and death dates are approximate (approx. between:275 AD and 285 AD), and are disputed by different researching entities. According to Robert D. Richardson, and Barry Moser, Emerson (1996), page 520, Saint George died due to being lynched by a mob that broke through into prison that hosted Saint George, but was going to execute him for his faith. It is said that the mob executed him for pillaging, and that he was also a known black market dealer of that historical time.
Saint George was a Roman soldier. He was discovered to be a Christian and ordered to renounce his religion and sacrifice to Roman pagan gods. When he refused he was tortured and beheaded in Nicomedia. He is not to be confused with George of Capadocia who was a heretical bishop who lived at a different time period and met his death when an angry mob dragged him to death. This connection to George of Capadocia was the invention of an atheist historian named Edward Gibbon but has been largely discounted by all reputable modern historians.
