How did Saint Gertrude live her life?
St. Gertrude the Great lived at the convent of Saint Mary's of Helfta, Saxony, in what is now modern Germany.
Saint Anthony was a very devout monk who went to live with in Italy and chose to live an eremitical life with hermits on Lake Como. Numerous disciples admired his dedication and sought to emulate his spirituality. He sought greater solitude in Gaul. He lived in solitude until the last two years of his life. He was made a saint for deep faith and discipline.
Fr. Kolbe was a Franciscan priest who was held as a captive in a German concentration camp during World War 2. When a prisoner escaped, the Germans were going to kill several other prisoners as punishment. Kolbe volunteered to take the place of one of the condemned men since that man had a family and children. He was starved for a time and then injected with carbolic acid to kill him.
