Tradition tells that St. Matthew the apostle and evangelist died in the year 90 AD under the reign of Domitian probably in Ethiopia. The Western tradition holds that he was martyred, by a sword or perhaps a spear, though the exact method is not revealed in the ancient martyrologies. The sword seems to be accepted, as most western Christian iconography features Matthew holding his Gospel as well as a sword, his symbol of martyrdom. Heracleon, however, gives an account that St. Matthew died peacefully of old age, however, there is no other documentation to supplement this claim, though it has become part of Greek legend.

We do not know where, how or when Matthew died, but various lurid Christian traditions about his supposed martyrdom arose over time: One tradition is that Matthew was slain by chopping apart by halberd in Ethiopia. Others are that Matthew was burnt alive, stoned to death or beheaded. None of these traditions is more credible than the others, and none of them says when Matthew died. According to Heracleon, who is quoted by Clement of Alexandria, Matthew did not die a martyr. Thus, it is most likely that Matthew would have died of natural causes.
