Trig is most likely derived from the condition Trisomy G, another name for Down syndrome. In the medical profession, those with Trisomy conditions (three chromosomes on either the 13th, 18th or, in Down Syndrome cases, the 21st) are sometimes given the name "trig babies". This is not meant as condescension but merely for brevity.
As for Ms. Palin's true motivation, Sarah allegedly decided to name her son Trig after his great uncle who was a commercial fisherman in Bristol bay, though this is somewhat questionable as the Heaths (Sarah's parents) moved to Alaska from Idaho when she was an infant in addition to having no Scandinavian roots of note (Trygg being the origin).

After all, if he didn't think she'd be of help, why not then just say "no" to his party? He'd be better off not running, then to run and lose. Logic suggests then that even if the Party strongly hinted, that McCain himself freely chose Palin.
