One version:

He helped discover / prove the cause (or mode of transmission) of sleeping sickness. At least that's according to Russian Historian Alexander Balyezin(Moscow State University) in his book "The Kings and Presidents of Uganda".

He was a Katikiro (Prime Minister) of the Kingdom of Buganda in the early 20th century and he also wrote several books on the culture and history of the people of Buganda (Uganda).
