Spanish exploration was sponsered by various wealthy elites, most notably Portuguese Christopher Columbus's expeditions sent by the Spanish Queen Isabella. Most came in search of new land for the overpopulating countries of Europe, riches in the form of gold and precious jewels, or even the Fountain of Youth. The Spanish came in boats, as did all other European explorers of the time.
