St. George was a Roman soldier and a Christian. He was tortured and beheaded about the year 304 at Lydda, Palestine, for defending Christians. When any person was martyred for their faith the early Christians considered them as instant saints.

While many of the stories surrounding St. George the Martyr are undoubtedly just legends, the Church has no doubt that he did, indeed, exist and gave his life as a martyr. When Emperor Diocletian ordered that all Roman soldiers known to be Christians be arrested and executed if they refused to renounce their religion, George stood fast and was beheaded in 303 AD.

Saint George the Martyr is not to be confused with George of Cappadocia the dissolute Arian bishop who was murdered by an angry Alexandrian mob on December 24, 361, two generations after Saint George died. For more information click on this link.
