How did Statue of Liberty get named?

As best I can determine, it was named by a French law professor, Edouard Rene de Laboulaye. He was one of the major forces behind the construction of the statue.

By the way, the name of it is not actually "the Statue of Liberty"; the statue's official name is Liberty Enlightening the World. or, in French, La Liberte Eclairant le Monde.
