We made a deal with the French and became ally with the Brit. Also, The King Rama V traded the small border land to keep a piece of mainland. Nowadays, people who live in that area still speak, read and write Thai. So, we never got colonized by the westerners at all. A important factor was transport in Thailand as no railroads were allowed to be built during the time of European colonization so armies could not be moved inland except by rivers. These rivers were well controlled by the Thais so the was no way to occupy the country.
