The European policies of colonization in the Western hemisphere ended by the end of 19th century. This was largely due to the expansion of power by the USA & the Spanish American War. The initiative of its ending came with the establishment of the USA as the preeminent force in the Western Hemisphere. Small islands and territories in South America still existed but they were insignificant. The Independence of Canada from the UK added to the ending of the colonization of the Western hemisphere as well.
