The Beatles met Ringo years later in Hamburg, although they knew of him as the drummer from another local band (Rory Storm and the Hurricanes). When Ringo was invited into the band, he had a reputation as the best drummer in Liverpool.

John Lennon formed the Beatles. Well, technically he formed the Quarrymen. John met Paul at a concert in which John was performing with his band, the Quarrymen. Paul was an aspiring guitarist at the time, and asked John if he could join the band. John agreed, and Paul was a guitarist for the Quarrymen. Paul later asked John if his school friend, George Harrison, could join the band as a guitarist. John agreed, and there they were. The Quarrymen disassembled in 1960, and John, Paul, and George formed a band named Johnny and the Moondogs. They were all guitarists and vocalists. They hired Paul's friend, Stuart Sutcliffe, who was an artist, and had never played any instrument before, to play bass for them. He sold his paints and easels and bought a Hofner bass. They then hired Pete Best as a drummer. They were named Johnny and the Moondogs for a while, but then changed to The Silver Beatles in 1961. They had been playing at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, England, when Brian Epstein noticed them and asked to hire them as their manager. They went on tour in Hamburg, Germany, as The Beatles, and in 1962, were asked to record their first album. Stuart Sutcliffe had quit along the way, and Paul was playing bass. When they went to EMI Studios in London to record Please Please Me, they dropped Pete Best and hired Richard Starkey, who had been playing bass in a skiffle band, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, at the time, and went by the name Ringo Starr. They recorded Please Please Me, and became a worldwide sensation.
