What were taxes like in the dark ages?

Economy in the dark ages was terrible. Warriors were sacking cities, and there were too many wars going on for a good economy or a good idea to come out of that time period.

Is it true or false that from 1100-750 bc the Greeks went through a difficult period of time called the Dark Age?

The period from 1100 to 750 BC in Greece is called the Greek Dark Ages, but since there were other periods in other places also called Dark Ages, it is a good idea to be careful about how the name is used. It is probably best not to use the term "the Dark Ages" to apply to the Greek Dark Ages, because most people who use the term without qualification mean Western Europe during the period of 476 to 1000 AD. It is also a term that has fallen out of use among historians.

Should the Middle Ages be called the dark age?

1st Answer The Dark Ages, while still interchangeable with the Middle Ages, is historically different. The Dark Ages are typically more associated, academically speaking, to the Early Middle Ages which spans from the fall of Rome to about 1000 AD. 2nd Answer This question is subjective, so perhaps it should get a subjective answer. Both the terms Middle Ages and Dark Ages are misleading, and personally I think neither should be used. The idea of the Middle Ages came about because the people after the time wanted to compare themselves favorably with ancient Rome, and did so by denigrating the people who had gone before them. The idea of the Dark Ages is that people were ignorant. But a study of the periods that get these names tells me, and other people I know who are educated on the subject, that the Middle Ages were not inferior to the Renaissance and might have been less ignorant. Consider, witch hunts began very late in the Middle Ages and continued to become more common and more deadly through the Renaissance and Reformation. Take a look at art of the middle ages. Admittedly it is less realistic than the art of Michelangelo, but I can hardly buy the idea that it is really all inferior to the art of the Renaissance in any objective way. The Church and civil authorities did not try to regulate science in the Middle Ages, but they did in the Renaissance. We look at the Dark Ages and the Middle Ages through a lens that was strongly colored by the people of the Renaissance, and the effect of this is misunderstanding. Calling the period dark is only a part of this, but it is not helpful. +++ The Dark Ages was never a synonym for the Mediaeval period, but used to be applied to the less-well known, unstable time following the end of the Roman Empire and its relatively high standards of living; and possibly ending with the time of the Saxons.

Is there a better name for the Dark Ages?

It is probably better to refer to the Dark Ages as the Early Middle Ages, if the time intended is 476 to 1000 AD. Otherwise, it is better to refer to the time as the Middle Ages, or part of the Middle Ages. The term dark ages is based on the idea that this was a time of ignorance and lack of intellectual development, which is not the case. The decline in intellectual activity began in the second or third century, and was largely complete by the year 476. During the so-called Dark Ages, there was a slow growth in learning. Schools were being opened during the entire period, architecture was developing, things were being invented, at least one encyclopedia was written, and commerce was slowly improving.

When did the dark ages begin in Europe?

It might be safest to say the Dark Ages lasted from the 5th century to the 10th century. The term Dark Ages is not really clearly defined, and in fact has fallen from use quite a bit. Originally, the idea of an age of obscurity was used to describe the period after the fall of the West Roman Empire. At the time the concept of Dark Ages was first described, in about 1330, the Renaissance had not yet started, and the writer, Petrarch, regarded himself as living in the dark ages. Later writers regarded the Dark Ages as the time from the fall of the West Roman Empire to the Renaissance, and so dated them identically with the Middle Ages, from the 5th century to the 15th. During the 19th century, historians came to understand the the Middle Ages had a lot going on, too much to be called Dark, in the sense of decline or decay. They began to make the time equal to those parts of the Middle Ages when there was little written, meaning the time of the 5th through 10th centuries. This idea had already been around for some time. Under this scheme, the Middle Ages were between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. The idea that the Carolingian Renaissance and Macedonian Renaissance, with their growth of culture and education, happened during a time of decay and decline, seems to fly in the face of logic. So many historians refer to the time from the 5th to 10th centuries as the Early Middle Ages instead of Dark Ages. Under this scheme, the term is not used at all. There have been people who had different, specific ideas of what the Dark Ages were.

How did Thomas Cole's paintings affect the nineteenth century?

Thomas Cole's paintings, particularly his landscapes depicting the American wilderness, helped shape the perception of the American landscape as wild and sublime. His work played a crucial role in promoting the idea of manifest destiny and the romanticization of nature in the 19th century. Cole's art also inspired the creation of the Hudson River School, a group of landscape painters who further popularized the American landscape as a subject for art.
