The invention of the lightbulb probably had the greatest effect on society. People stayed up later, as now they were able to read and work in better light than was available from a lantern or candle. Safety was also effected, because the ire hazards of an electric light was much less than from candles or lanterns. It has also been reported to decrease the age of maturity and the onset of puberty in adolescents. The reason for this occurrence it is thought is that by extending the hours people stay awake sets the body into metabolic high gear. Perhaps if we want to stay young... more sleep is the answer.

The light bulb also led to other technology that we use today. Vacuum tubes for early radio and televisions were spin-offs of the methods used to manufacture lightbulbs.
