In reading about him I think he was a person of great intelligence and this reflected in how he lived his life. Some saw him a contentious and a revolutionary. Abigail Adams claimed that Jefferson has used his position as vice president to undermine the policies of her husband John Adams. In the election of 1800 he was accused of "the blackest calumny and foulest falsehoods." He acted disinterested and detached but hired people to libel Adams with outrageous charges. Many felt that Jefferson had mortgaged his honor to win an election. Jefferson showed massive contradictions with his personal behavior and his public. He managed to convince himself that these were apparent to all. He was one of the major figures of his age and it seemed that he believed the fiction that he had come to believe in himself about himself in history. He also saw the world in terms of clashing dichotomies and the forces of light against the forces of darkness with no room for anything in between. If asked I think Jefferson would say he lived his life the way he wanted to and saw the world as it should be. He and John Adams died on July 4, 1826 and he died just before Adams collapsed in his favorite chair. His last words were about Jefferson and is reported to have said "Thomas Jefferson still lives." He was wrong for the moment in time, but right about the effect Jefferson would have on history.
Thomas Jefferson had a fairly positive outlook on his life. He was proud of his accomplishments, particularly his role in drafting the Declaration of Independence and his presidency. However, he also faced personal hardships and challenges, such as the death of his wife and financial difficulties. Overall, Jefferson viewed his life as one of achievement and contribution to the nation.
