They got it in many ways. You could argue that they stole a lot (or all) of it from Native Americans when they refused to honor treaties and agreements that they made with the native inhabitants... you could argue the same for all of the countries that now own land in the Americas. Regardless of who owned or stole it in the first place though, they bought some of it from France, Britain, Mexico, Russia, and Spain. They took over other parts of it in treaties that were the result of war, or border disputes.
