In 1584, the name "Virginia" was suggested, with Virginia being a name for Queen Elizabeth I of England (because she was known as the Virgin Queen). Sir Walter Raleigh may have suggested the name.

Virginia was named after the first child born in the Virginia colony. The child's name was Virginia Dare
It is named after Queen Elizabeth I who was also known as the Virgin Queen.
