Literally translated Volkswagen = Peoples Car (an affordable vehicle). The "Beetle" was designed pre WW2 to be this "peoples car".

It had a "bolt on chassis" and this enabled the floorpan to be utilised for military purpose by fixing a different body onto it.

Thus the german army staff car - Kubelwagen - was in place.

And of course, the Feuhrer also commissioned the Autobahn - the first multi lane highway in the world.

Oh how he was slated then - but in fairness, he did have some ideas way ahead of his time.

It began and was made in Hitler's Germany. The name means "the people's car". It wasn't until the 1960's that it became a cult classic car. It was an inexpensive car to buy and own. I have had 4 and still love them.
