According to The Street Book: An Encyclopedia of Manhattan's Street Names and Their Origins, by Henry Moscow, Wooster Street was named after David Wooster, "a lackluster Revolutionary general who was killed in action."
Wooster was born in Connecticut and in 1776 was named "a major general commanding six regiments" of Connecticut troops. Wooster led his men in the Battle of Harlem and the Battle of Brooklyn Heights (which is also known as the Battle of Long Island), "but was considered inept by his fellow officers, including General Washington."
Wooster died on April 17, 1777 in a minor battle with the British in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
