This question requires a multi-faceted answer, as there was a complex series of events beginning with the assassination in Bosnia. But Tsarist Russia was kicking the weakened "Sick Man" (Ottoman Empire) around in the prior century, and established secret treaties to dismember the Turkish empire among the other allies. To that aim, the Russians funded the Ottoman-Armenians, who had a history of aiding the Russians in the wars of 1828, 1854 and 1877, and helped them to rebel, in return for promises the Russians never intended to keep.

World War 1 affected Russia so much because they lived in poverty for so long. They sent many soldiers into the war, so they also had to send a lot of food, which led to the poverty back home in Russia because they were sending it all away. There was nothing left to eat.

Russia's participation in World War 1 led to the February Russian Revolution and the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. The monarchic system of government was overthrown and ended forever. The Russian army was suffering heavy losses in the field and many lost battles. This was because the Russian military was poorly equipped and badly led leading to many casualties among the soldiers. Soldiers were deserting by the thousands. Because of heavy military losses and no hope of improvement, most soldiers refused to shoot their fellow citizens when they rioted in Petrograd over shortages of food. Tsar Nicholas II ordered army units to quell the riots but they refused. Nicholas realized he no longer had the power to control the populace so he abdicated the throne.

Had the Russian army experienced successful campaigns and fewer losses in the field, the soldiers might not have become so insubordinate and rebellious. They might have supported the Tsar's call to break up the riots. But, the soldiers saw no hope of living through the war, so they turned against the Tsar. As a result of Russia's participation in World War 1, the Tsar was overthrown.
