It is not Yup'ik Indian, it is Yup'ik Eskimo. They lived off the land and were nomadic until the U.S. turned Alaska into a state and forced the indigineous people to create a permanent residence. Today it is even harder for them to make a living because of global warming melting the permafrost and causing inlets to wash away villages. They can no longer lead a nomadic life because of the government. They were nomadic because they knew that one area would not support them forever.

First of all, it is Yup'ik Eskimo not Yup'ik Indian. They first made their houses out of sod, wooden beams, and stones. Today they make their houses like the rest of Americans.
Miyax, from Julie Of The Wolves, (that's what my search brought up) was Yupik. See the related link to the Wikipedia article about the Yupik people. However, she was heading to San Fransisco, so she was in the middle of an un-named tundra.
