Cat Stevens relates that he nearly drowned off the coast of California in 1976 when he shouted for God to save him. Thereafter he was grateful for being saved and thus he began searching to quench his thirst for spirituality. Stevens relates that he never found what he was looking for in many major religions. One day, his brother gave him a copy of the Koran. Stevens felt that in his opinion that is what he was looking for. S tevens took a liking to the story of Joseph in the Koran, feeling he could relate to that story. Stevens converted to Islam and abandoned his pop career in 1977. He adopted the name Yusuf Islam in 1988.

∙ 14y ago- According to his speech about his conversion to Islam, he said that he had always had many questions about religions, soul, target of life....etc. & consequently he started to study the different religions to find answers to his wonders. His life had been changed after he had received a translation of the Holy Quran from his brother who wanted to help him find the truth.
- Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam) said that the Holy Quran was a guidance to him that explained to him everything he wanted to know, he said that he felt that everything made so much sense & then he wanted to be a Muslim after about one and a half years from receiving the Holy Quran.

∙ 12y agoHe was a Christian. He was reading The Bible about Jesus saying "Take your coat, sell it, and buy a sword!" He asked a preacher why it said that, and he said sword was actually 'word', except that an Italian man wrote this, and you know that Italian spaghetti was common, so he ate this while writing, and a noodle fell on the sheet, which printed out an 'S'. Yusuf got mad, since he has been cheated by other Christians before . He prepared to change his religion, which is Islam.
