Best Answer

Unicorns have horns because one day a unicorn fell on the ground and hit his head and he wished he had a horn so that he would not have hurt his head so right after that all unicorns including him had horns.

They are born with it.

In the Gigantomancy Gaia sent a league of giants in an effort to over-throw the Olympians, one of these was of such vileness everyone feared to even touch him. So Poseidon (who is concerned with horses) employed a herd of them to fend off the monstrosity. To enable them to do this he endowed them each with a horn that would repel all evil.

As the battle was a tumultuous affair these horses were forgotten in the last of the fray and they retained their horns and the ability to pass them on to their descendants.
