Why did American planters lead a rebellion in Hawaii?

I believe it was Dole that started the revolt because he wanted to get rich basically as did many other planters, and Hawaii was the best place to do it for planters. Plus bad working conditions and no traveling probably were incentives too. To build upon that, in 1890, the McKinley Tariff had been implemented upon the planters which raised taxes on Hawaiian products. The planters revolted against the tariff, and discovered that the only way to overcome the tax would be to have Hawaii annexed to the union. Therefore, the planters were fighting the tax, in addition to fighting for the annexation of Hawaii in order to avoid the tax.

Why did the planters take over the Hawaiian government?

The nativeHawaiiansdid not want to become a US state, whereas the planters did so that they would not have to pay the tariff on their goods when they imported them to the mainland. Since the natives did not want to become a part of America, the planters took control of the government so that they could claim that this was what the Hawaiian people wanted. The president at the time (i cant recall who) did not believe this to be the true wish of the Hawaiian people, and so rejected the request, until another president a few years later approved it.
