During the Reign of Terror, the Jacobin faction led by Maximilien de Robespierre controlled the French government. He was elected as a "Third Estate" (i.e. a Commoner rather than an Aristocratic or Clerical) deputy of Artois to the Estates-General that convened at the Palace of Versailles, on May 5th 1789, on the eve of the French Revolution, and subsequently served in the National Constituent Assembly, where his earnest and skillful oratory soon commanded attention.
Robespierre, backed by the committee, proceeded to ruthlessly eliminate all whom he considered to be enemies of the Revolution, both extremists and moderates. On July 27th 1794 Robespierre was placed under arrest. He shot himself but the bullet was lodged in his jaw. He was put to the guillotine the next day.
There are lots of theories how this came about but France where going to rough times and the government were lead in that direction. If the government had knowledge of God the thing would be different. Most leaders have their own agenda and morals out of God concepts.
