The English settled in the New World for religious freedom because in England, they were persecuted if they believed in another religion. Also, merchants wanted to become wealthy from trade. Then, poor peasants thought they could start a new, better life in the New World by farming there. Another reason, is resources like gold and spices. Criminals could get out of jail if they want to! All they had to do was become an indentured servant, and that seemed like a great idea to them.
