John Adams didn't become President in 1801. He was elected by the electoral college in 1796 and served a single term before being beaten by Thomas Jefferson in the 1800 Presidential election. Despite losing the election, Adams remained in office until March 4, 1801, because that was when the Presidential term of office ended at that time. The Twentieth Amendment, ratified in 1933, changed the inauguration date from March 4 to January 20 of the year following the election.
