Bill Gates got so rich because he realized that people wanted to sit down and use computers without having to get a college degree in mathematics. When he established his company, the best selling word processing software was a program called WordStar. Computer programmers liked it. They could write machine language code and call it from the program. Bill Gates figured out that computers needed an operating system and programs that secretaries could use. A secretary wants to sit down at a computer and type a letter with a minimum of problems. She does not want to write machine language.

Bill Gates developed an operating system called Windows. It was much easier to use than anything else on the market except the system used by Apple computer. It was not perfect, just better. Apple computers cost far more than those using Windows. As a result they sold to a niche market. They were used for design and publishing. Windows had the rest. New personal computers used the Windows Operating System to run their programs. So Bill Gates made the system that let secretaries use desktop computers. Everytime one of them sold a computer, they sold his system with it.
