Why were castles turned into houses?

The reason is fairly simple. Castles were a strong point and a defensible position when under attack, sometimes for weeks. With the coming of gunpowder and cannons, they were no longer able to defend them for a long period and for that reason became obsolete. The nobility then spent their money on creating an elaborate dwelling instead of a castle.
