Shamanism goes back to very early pre-historic times. Early cave paintings (such as those in the famous Lascaux caves in France) are thought to have some shamanistic purpose, such as to magically attract game through the law of similarity. But there is very little solid information about what cavemen believed.
Cavemen primarily lived in simple shelters made from materials like wood, bone, and animal hides. These shelters were temporary and could be in caves, rock overhangs, or structures built with branches and leaves. They did not have permanent dwellings like modern houses.
Cavemen would have made their homes in places with access to shelter, water and food. If these resources were available in mountain areas there is no reason why they could not have lived there.

For the most part they didn't. They needed to hunt, or gather, food nearly every day.
Cavemen lived by exploring new things like learning how to make fire so they could eat cooked food. Cavemen found different survival tips and that's how they lived there lives.
Cavemen used wood for fire to keep themselves and others warm. They also widdled the wood to make weapons.
In the Geico commercials, the cavemen play as actors so they are obviously wearing costume and make-up. They probably have very talented make-up and costume artists.
