With the help of Julius Caesar. First she is suspected of having contributed to the "removal" of several brothers and sisters closer to the throne. When her father died, she (then 18) and her 10-year-old brother were claimed monarchs (and wedded). After conflict between them she fled with sister Arsinoe. When Julius Caesar arrived, the murder and disgraceful beheading of Pompey at the hands of Cleopatra's brother's men was enough to guarantee he would not favour him. After war between brothers, Caesar placed Cleopatra and another younger brother of hers on the throne. After the death of Caesar, Cleopatra is claimed to have poisoned this second brother and made regent her son by Caesar, Caesarion.
