The Cote D'Azur, which refers to the far southeastern portion of France (and includes the coast of the independent state of Monaco), derives its name from the scintillating blue color of the Mediterranean Sea, which it borders. Meaning "Coast of Azure", the term originated in a novel written by the Frenchman, Stephen Liegeard.
